A Series suspension cans have a felt seal fitted within the end plate at both ends to minimise the risk of water/dirt contamination to the suspension unit’s internal springs and friction plates.

Available here is a felt seal replacement where regular lubrication into the can using castor oil or suitable vegetable oil equivalent helps too.
